Facebook has responded to criticism of its privacy settings, making them easier to use. Here some of the most question and answer on how to keep your facebook privacy save.

How can I keep my Facebook profile safe and private?
You can keep your profile private by following a few simple steps :
First, click Account in the top right hand corner of the main Facebook page, then choose Privacy settings,
where you’ll see all the options laid out before you. Bear in mind that there are a number of personal details that are permanently in the public domain – these include your name and profile picture, your gender and any
Networks that you are a member of.

By default, other basic directory information such as location and interests are also accessible to all, but
this can be changed. On the main Privacy page, click ‘View settings’ and you’ll then be able to choose who can see this information, as well as your Friends list and education and employment details. There are three
settings – Everyone, Friends of Friends and Friends Only.

How can I control who sees photographs of me?
Controlling who sees photographs or videos in which you have been tagged, as well as details such as your
phone number, email address, birthday and relationship status has been made simpler too. On the main Privacy page you can choose whether Everyone, Friends of Friends or Friends Only can see these items, or you can elect to use Facebook’s recommended settings. Make your selections and click the ‘Apply these settings’ button. Just below these options, note the check box that lets Friends of people tagged in your photographs see the pictures – this is checked by default, but can be unchecked.

Can third party websites still see my details?
Not if you don’t want them to. Go to the ‘Edit your settings’ link under the ‘Applications and websites’
heading, then select Instant Personalisation on the next page. You’ll be taken to a page that explains
Facebook’s policy on giving information to third-party sites and why it lets these sites access this data.
At the bottom of the page, make sure the box marked ‘Enable instant personalisation on partner websites’ is
unchecked.

Can People access my profile via search engines?
Yes they can, but if you’re uncomfortable with this idea, it is easy to prevent. To make sure that
nothing from your Facebook profile shows up in web searches, select the ‘Edit your settings’ link under the
‘Applications and websites’ heading on the main privacy page, click the Public search option and make sure
the ‘Enable public search’ box is unchecked.

Can i block individuals from seeing my profile?
Yes – simply click the ‘Edit your lists’ link below the ‘Block lists’ heading. You can then enter the
name or email address of anyone you don’t want to see your Facebook profile.
